About Us

What is a Safe Community?

        A Safe Community is one that has been nationally designated by the Safe Communities Foundation of Canada.  The Safe Community works together with other community organizations to plan and organize programs that will make the city safe to live, work, learn and play.

        The Safe Communities Foundation was created as a result of one family's tragedy.  In November 1994 Sean Kells was pouring a highly flammable chemical from one ungrounded drum to another when it exploded and ignited.  Sean was not told that what he was doing was dangerous and that he should be taking precautions.

        Sean was killed the third day of his part-time job at the age of 19.  It wasn't an accident; it was preventable.  Since that tragic day, Sean's father Paul Kells, has make it his goal to help prevent any other family from experiencing the loss and pain that he and his family have experienced.

        There are currently 32 Safe Communities in Canada and they are continuing to grow and thrive.  You can find more information on other Safe Communities if you click on the button titled Safe Communities.  If you are interested in becoming a Safe Community please contact the Safe Communities Foundation.

Kingston

        Partners for a Safe Community was established in 1997 to provide Kingston and area with the support, tools and networks to develop and maintain successful health and safety programs for the small business employer and young people in their youth transition years.

        Our goals include:

bullet

assist local employers in reducing the number and cost of WSIB claims,

bullet

increase Health & Safety and Injury Prevention awareness among youth,

bullet

build upon community injury databases, and

bullet

coordinate the efforts of well established, safety focused organizations in the community, while at the same time removing the duplication of efforts.

        Our initiatives include:

bullet

the Safety Group Program,

bullet

Delivery to youth a number of high interest, educational interactive activities such as: Racing Against Drugs, Heroes, Young Worker Awareness Program, Risk Watch, and Summer Safety Days,

bullet

Evaluation of Health & Safety attitudes and practises through survey research, and

bullet

Creation of a Central Resource Centre for safety material.

        Our accomplishments include:

bullet

three time recipient of Safe Communities Foundation Award of Excellence;

bullet

awarded CAUBO;

bullet

four consecutive years running Racing Against Drugs, exposing 8,000 students to the programs anti-drug message; and

bullet

four consecutive years running the Safe Communities Incentive Program, graduating 130 firms from the Safe Workplace Awareness Program.

Steering Committee

            The role of the steering committee:
