Risk Watch®

Risk Watch® is a comprehensive injury prevention curriculum for children in preschool through grade 8. The program was co-funded by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Lowe's Home Safety Council.

The program started being distributed throughout Kingston's elementary schools as a pilot project by Kingston Emergency Services (Fire, Police and Ambulance) and the KFL&A Health Unit at no charge to the schools in 1999. Five sets of Risk Watch curriculum were provided for the first year. Future years funds for purchasing the materials are raised by the Risk Watch Coalition.

Risk Watch® is a sequential program of instruction involving children at five learning levels from preschool through grade 8. At each level, kids act out learning activities by assuming a character role appropriate to their developmental stage. Each unit addresses all eight risk areas and builds on prior lessons. The levels include:

  • Grades Pre-K and K - Students participate in the role of "Storyteller". The students and teacher share stories using a variety of techniques.
  • Grades 1 and 2 - This level capitalizes on a child's natural curiosity by placing students in the role of "Detective". As they investigate mysteries involving the eight major risk areas, kids will apply critical thinking skills to analyze situations and situations and learn how to spot and avoid potential dangers.
  • Grades 3 and 4 - Students at this level are ready to become "Reporters" using the five W's to write effective stories that highlight potential dangers in each of the eight major risk areas.
  • Grades 5 and 6 - In the role of "Promoters", children market safe behaviours to their peers, family members, and community. Students and teachers use advanced communication skills to identify, research, create, and promote safety messages.
  • Grades 7 and 8 - Students in this age group assume the role of "Coach", becoming role models and advocates for safety in their own community and throughout society.
